INITIAL MODULE TRAINING – AN OVERVIEW

  • Train as an Instructor in any of our programs – check them out here.
  • Initial Module Training is a three-day course, usually delivered over a Saturday and Sunday (around 8 hours each day - called "Day 1" and "Day 2"). Day 3 is attended approximately 8 weeks after your Day 2.
  • You can choose to attend the whole three days of your IMT, face-to-face (in-person). Or if you enrol in an ONLINE IMT (OIMT) you’ll complete Days 1 and 2 online, and Day 3 face-to-face.*
  • You’ll receive comprehensive training materials, including music and choreography, prior to your start date.
  • World-class Trainers take you through the training, step-by-step.
  • By the end of Days 1 and 2, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively teach the Les Mills program of your choice.
  • To become a world-class Instructor, once you have completed Days 1 and 2, you will head back to your Endorsing Club to practise and learn on the job via Team Teaching.
  • Around eight weeks after your Day 2, you’ll attend your face-to-face Day 3 training. Day 3 is an assessment day. All Instructors complete Day 3 in-person as it helps to ensure your teaching skills are of the highest quality.
  • Successfully completing Day 3 will certify you as an Les Mills Instructor and you’ll be eligible to teach in any licensed Club.
  • If you receive a "Re-sit" result from your Day 3, you will be required to attend another Day 3, which does involve additional fees.
  • All certifications must be completed within six months of your original training dates.
WHEN AND WHERE IS TRAINING HELD?

Days 1 and 2 for FACE-TO-FACE Initial Module Training, are delivered at locations all over the country, typically at our Partner Clubs.

Days 1 and 2 for ONLINE IMTs are attended via Zoom, from a location of your choice.

Day 3 for both FACE-TO-FACE and ONLINE IMTs must be attended in-person, and are typically held at our Partner Clubs, all over the country.

IMTs are held regularly throughout the year, in locations across the Asia Pacific region, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
WHAT CAN I TEACH?

We offer a wide variety of different training programs - everything from strength-based workouts, to dance, HIIT, cycling and more. View our workouts here.

If you're not sure which program to take up, speak to your fellow Instructors at your local gym or get in touch with us at ask@lesmills.com.au. We will be happy to help.

You might also like to see which clubs and facilities in your area offer the Les Mills program that you're interested in teaching.
ENDORSEMENT

Prior to signing up for Initial Module Training, you’ll have to get an endorsement from a Club to ensure that you’ll have somewhere to practise after Day 1 and 2. Reach out to your favourite Instructor to connect you with the Group Fitness Manager at the facility.

An endorsement is simply a verbal agreement that the club will allow you to team-teach with an experienced instructor once you have completed Days 1 and 2. This is not an agreement of employment, simply a starting point to ensure you have somewhere to practise after completing Days 1 and 2 of your IMT.

Note: The Club must be licensed to deliver the program you are becoming trained in.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT INITIAL MODULE TRAINING

Designed to fit different learning styles, your course will include lectures, group discussions, practical workout sessions and opportunities to practise your teaching skills.

Topics include:
  • Class structure and benefits
  • How to interpret, understand and learn choreography
  • How to perform and evaluate correct exercise technique
  • Why exercises are executed in a particular way
  • How to coach the class so that it is both safe and inspirational
  • How to create a memorable, fun and effective workout experience
How to prepare
  • We recommend you attend plenty of Les Mills classes before attending your training, so you feel very familiar with the program.
  • You’ll receive your training materials - including a video of the Release you're going to learn and pre-work to help you prepare for training about 10 days before your training starts.
  • You’ll be given two tracks to learn and you need to practise them until you’re able to present them with just the music playing
(i.e. not looking at your notes).
  • We recommend you set aside a few hours to learn the choreography and practise the Release.
WHAT ARE THE FITNESS REQUIREMENTS?

  • Your training will be physically and mentally challenging, involving practical and theoretical components
  • It's designed for participants who are experienced in fitness classes, in good mental health and physically fit
  • If you’re unsure about your fitness level, consult your doctor before registering – please don’t put yourself at risk
WHAT DO I NEED FOR TRAINING?

  • Your Instructor Handbook
  • A smartphone or iPod, to access your training materials
  • Headphones
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • A change of clothes – you will sweat!
  • Food and water
  • A laptop or tablet so that you can review your allocated tracks as homework after the first day
  • Online Only: You will need a stable internet connection, access to a computer or mobile device (with a microphone) and camera for the duration of the training
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER INITIAL MODULE TRAINING?

After you’ve successfully completed your two days of training, you will head back to your Endorsing Club to practise and learn on the job via Team Teaching. We recommend you spend as much time as possible shadow-teaching with existing instructors to prepare for your Day 3 which is delivered Face-to-Face.

To pass, you’ll need to show competency in:
  1. Choreography
  2. Technique
  3. Coaching
