The key to keeping your classes full is to keep your participants coming back, however this can sometimes be daunting for your new members. There’s a big group of people out there who need our help – and you’ll often find them in the back row trying not to be noticed.
Statistics tell us that 33% of people who join gyms will drop out within the first 3 months and 50% will drop out within the first 6 months of joining however by using some simple, proven tools to take care of this group you can get more of them hooked into fitness and, at the same time, grow your class numbers and ultimately your membership.
Getting started doesn’t mean running a marathon on day one. Or even month one! Encouraging people to ease their way into exercise means they are more likely to stick with it for the long haul.
Les Mills has conducted in-depth research into beginners’ adherence to exercise, and we now know that the key to great results is starting slowly. As instructors, this means giving new people the option to leave after the first few tracks (and slowly building track by track), as well as taking an interest in their training schedules; the optimal mix is cardio, strength, core training and flexibility.
In BODYPUMP, BODYBALANCE, BODYATTACK, RPM, BODYCOMBAT, BODYJAM and BODYSTEP, our SmartStart logo will appear in the choreography book at the point in the class that we suggest you encourage new people to leave. This will help to ensure their long-term success.
Learn more about how to guide your new participants through their fitness journey by referring to your choreography notes each quarter.
