It's common for group fitness participants to enter a class (e.g., at the end of a tough day) feeling stressed, worried or anxious, and leave feeling empowered, accomplished and - importantly - happy! There aren't many jobs like this, where you get to create the best part of someone's day!
The Importance of Group Fitness
Fitness habits have changed post-pandemic. Les Mills conducted extensive research* and discovered the following interesting insights:
- two-thirds of gym members prefer to work out in groups
- live fitness classes are the single most popular gym-type activity
- LES MILLS classes are the most popular branded fitness class with 67% of members doing at least one LES MILLS class a week
- the quality of the Instructor is the number one, most important factor in a group fitness class
- 40% of group fitness class participants are looking for an instructor who coaches ‘intelligently’.
Given the importance of group fitness - both for clubs and their members - even more crucial is the engagement of rockstar Instructors to lead those classes.
Why you’ll never regret becoming a Les Mills Instructor
If you’ve fallen in love with Les Mills workouts and you’ve caught yourself thinking about or visualising yourself on stage as an Instructor, here are the six reasons you should get certified to teach:
- You’ll learn how to engage and truly connect with people: Les Mills Instructor Training teaches you how to connect with and motivate different personality styles, and connect with different age groups, demographics and backgrounds - practical skills that you’ll also find useful in your everyday life.
- You’ll develop winning leadership skills: Learn to present to, lead and inspire groups of all sizes - both on the stage, and off!
- You’ll enjoy income benefits: It’s a pretty sweet deal to get paid to work out and help others! And it’s true what they say - when you generate an income or a secondary income by doing something you love, you'll never ‘work’ a day in your life!
- Create a career where you can teach and reach thousands: In addition to generating income from teaching, you could eventually be spotted/selected to join the Trainer and Presenter (TAP) team. This handpicked team of rockstars are responsible for training other Instructors, presenting at Quarterly Workshops and other events (both of which can involve exciting travel opportunities), and sometimes they even get sponsored by partners such as adidas!
- You can tap into awesome exclusive discounts: Les Mills Instructors can tap into exclusive discounts and special offers from partners such as adidas, Fitness Audio, Australian Institute of Fitness, and more.
- You’ll get an edge within the fitness industry: Les Mills Instructors are well recognised on a global scale and highly employable to fitness facilities.

What programs should you teach?
The below diagram is a matrix that reflects personality characteristics or values that may be a natural fit with the essence of each Les Mills program. Of course, this is a general guide, and not all programs will suit someone’s natural style.

What do you need to become a Les Mills Instructor?
- Qualifications? Yes! Whilst none are needed prior to undertaking a Les Mills Initial Training, you may need a baseline industry qualification to be employed by clubs in your area!
- Club endorsement: Before you sign up for Initial Training, you’ll first need to secure Endorsement from a club (see below for more details).
For Australian-based Instructors only:
- Got a Cert II and IV in Fitness? Great! Make sure your certificates included the relevant group fitness units, as all courses can vary. This can be confirmed by contacting AUSactive.
- What is GEL? GEL stands for ‘Group Exercise Leader’, which is a short online course that enables you to teach Les Mills fitness classes. GEL is a condensed baseline qualification. To find out more about GEL email ask@lesmills.com.au
What is Club Endorsement?
- Before you sign up for Initial Training, you need to secure Endorsement from a club. All great Instructors need a starting point; a place where they can learn and develop by putting their skills into practice; this is where Endorsement comes into play.
- Endorsement from a club is NOT an offer of employment. Instead, it is confirmation that you will be provided with opportunities to shadow and team-teach with an experienced Instructor at that club, once you’ve successfully completed Days 1 and 2 of your training.
